Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Financial Access for All
National Hispanic Heritage Week was established in 1968 but was expanded to the current month-long celebration in 1988. This month is considered a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors originate in Spain, Mexican, the Caribbean, Central and South America.
We’re proud to serve the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’s Hispanic populations. At Metro, we know banking needs should not face barriers of language or access, and we work every day to make sure the financial products and services our community members need is available.
Massachusetts Hispanic Community by the Numbers
- Of the 62 million Hispanic American residents in the United States, the U.S. Census in 2020 last calculated just under 900,000 Hispanic and Latino residents in are living in Massachusetts. That is 12% of Massachusetts’ entire population!
- Hispanic residents make up 30% of Metro Boston’s population.
- According to the Mel King Institute in 2021, Lawrence reported 81% of the city’s resident are Latino/Hispanic. Chelsea came in second with 67%, and Lynn boasts a large population as well. Metro is proud to have branch locations in each of these cities!
Metro is a Juntos Avanzamos Credit Union
FDIC data estimates that, in 2021, 9.3% of Hispanic households in the U.S. were unbanked, while 24.1% were underbanked.
Unbanked individuals are not served by a financial institution, which means they have no bank account. Underbanked individuals often don’t have access to additional financial services or products like loans, lines of credit, or anything beyond a normal checking or savings account.
As a Juntos Avanzamos (“Together We Advance”) Credit Union, Metro Credit Union is committed to helping those populations learn how to navigate the U.S. financial system and provide them with the tools they need to achieve their financial goals.
Juntos Avanzamos credit unions employ bilingual, culturally competent staff and leadership and treat all their members with respect, regardless of immigration status. The Juntos Avanzamos network is growing quickly; it currently includes 141 credit unions in 28 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
